Harriet Tubman

Living History Experience

The Harriet Tubman Living History Experience highlights and heightens public awareness of the Underground Railroad, Civil War, and the life of one of the 19th century’s most celebrated figures:  Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman:
Living History Experience

In 2002, Millicent Sparks was commissioned by the New Jersey Secretary of State to portray this legendary figure in the Harriet Tubman-William Still Walk, a two-week, 180 mile trek across the State of New Jersey retracing the path of the Underground Railroad.  Since then, she has portrayed Harriet Tubman throughout the region for schools (4th grade and up), churches, colleges, senior centers, museums, women’s shelters, corporations, prisons, state and local government agencies, community groups and special events.

Informed by a careful examination of the scholarly literature on Tubman, Millicent Sparks’ portrayal of Harriet Tubman blends accounts of special events in Tubman’s life with an acute sense of Tubman’s personal qualities—her emotional depth, profound spirituality, immense intelligence, extraordinary dignity, and astounding courage.

At the conclusion of her portrayal, Millicent responds in character to questions about Tubman.

Harriet Tubman: Bringing History To Life in Classrooms

Living history performances have a unique capacity to open windows onto the past.  They not only enable audiences to better reconstruct and interpret the past, but they also often demonstrate how this past has become part of the historical memory.  When such performances also focus on a heroic icon like Harriet Tubman – a historical figure who demonstrated an unyielding and fearless resolve to obtain liberty and social justice for herself and others – they are all the more compelling.

I just want to thank you for your wonderful presentation of Harriet Tubman last night to our roundtable.  It was so real and so moving.  I honestly cannot ever remember any speaker leaving our group in such silence and awe.  After you left, they could not even speak.  Once they did it was from the heart.  So you certainly left a lasting impression! Thank you again so much!!

What a wonderful performance you gave us today.  The children couldn’t stop talking about what a great actor you are and about how much you knew about Harriet Tubman.
They were moved too by the story of Harriet returning for John and finding him married to someone else.  Overall it was a fantastic experience for them.  As one child put it, “She didn’t just answer questions, she told stories.”  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

What a gem!  Our 4th grade toured there on the 2nd and the kids are still talking about it.  Harriet Tubman was priceless!  The adults were in tears!  Definitely this was one of our best field trips ever and we take 7-8 a year.  Count on us for next year!
